Karwa Chauth is a religious festival that is celebrated by married women. Karwa Chauth is just a one-day festival. The significant part of this particular festival is ‘fasting’. It is a popular belief that by doing so, they are praying for the well-being as well as for the long life of their husbands. This auspicious festival is majorly celebrated in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana.

The story of Karwa Chauth is quite interesting. A long time ago, there lived a gorgeous woman named  Veeravati. She was married to an affluent businessman. On the occasion of her first Karva Chauth after her marriage, she went to her parents’ house. During the course of her fast, she was exhausted and got sick as the day progressed. Her brothers couldn’t stand her troubles and decided to end her fast by faking the appearance of the moon.

However, the moment she ate her dinner, she received the news that her husband was dead. She immediately rushed to her husband’s house. On her way, she met Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Veeravati got to know that she had broken her fast by watching a false moon. However, when Veeravati asked Goddess Parvati for forgiveness, the goddess granted her the boon that her husband will be revived and can be cured by faithfully following the rituals. She observed a strict fast followed by Puja and Bhog.
